Providing Sex Offender Treatment is not something I set out to do. In 1986, while working as the Unit Supervisor of my local MHMR, I received a call from the District Judge’s office asking if we could provide treatment for a convicted sex offender.  Not knowing any better and wanting to meet the needs of the community, I agreed to give it a try.  It didn’t take me long to know I was in over my head so I began to go for training. Training lead to more training and before I knew it I was a trained sex offender treatment provider.

I went into private practice in 1988 and have had a sex offender case load ever since, along with a general treatment caseload. Working with a sex-offender population is interesting and I have met many parole and probation officers who are conscientious, dedicated people.  It is my style to work with the officers as a treatment team. This provides better care for the client and the community.

The number one goal of sex offender treatment is “NO MORE VICTIMS.”  Since I am a psychotherapist my treatment program involves group therapy and family therapy in conjunction with didactic modules. Some of the modules include Accepting Responsibility, Victim Empathy, Offense Cycle, Drug, Alcohol and Pornography Addictions, Anger Control, Family of Origin Factors, Relapse Prevention, Coping Skills, Victimization Issues, Sexual Education and Healthy Relationships, as well as other modules tailored to meet specific needs of the individual client.

The statistics regarding recidivism are discouraging but my belief is that each individual client gets to decide which part of the equation they will represent. With accountability, understanding of how they came to abuse someone, understanding how their actions have hurt everyone involved (including the victim, everyone who loves and cares about the victim, themselves and everyone who loves and cares about them) and an understanding of what their high risk factors are, as well as the coping skills to deal with them, can increase their chances of never having another victim.  It is my intention to provide my clients with the best care possible and treat them with proper respect.
